Santorini is one of the most famous islands in Europe, located about 200 km southeast of Greece’s mainland. Santorini is a 90 square kilometer remaining island after an enormous volcanic eruption 3,600 years ago. This eruption resulted into a rough “dry” landscape with high, steep cliffs.

You are probably reading this because you are planning a trip to Santorini. This is why we created a list of things you should do or see during your stay on this small Greek island.

Visit Oia
Do you know those postcards with photos of beautiful white buildings and blue rooftops? Those photos are almost all taken in the city Oia. Oia is located in the north of Santorini and is probably one of the most picturesque cities you will ever see. The blue dome church, the cute windmills, the steep cliff next to the ocean and the stunning sunset make Oia a unique sight to see.

Rent a quad
As we mentioned before, Santorini is a small and rough island. Because of this, most tourist like to explore the island by quad. You can rent a quad with a normal car license from as low as €20,- per day in low season. With a quad there is no place you can’t reach.

Beach hopping
When you have a quad or any other kind of transportation, spend one full day driving around the coastline of Santorini and stop at every single beach you can find. No beach on Santorini is plain or boring. Visit the impressive Red Beach, the long and calm black sand Perissa beach or the isolated Cape Columbo.

Drink wine during the sunset
Santorini is known for its wine and a visit here isn’t complete without tasting the local wine. The best place to do this is at one of the wineries with a sunset viewpoint. Locals advised us to go to Santo Wines Winery to see the best sunset. As you can see in the photo below, they were not lying.

Visit Old Port
Old Port is the location where you will arrive when you visit Santorini by cruise ship. This location is unique because of the 588 steps you have to take to climb down from Fira to the Old Port. If walking is not your thing, you can choose to ride on a donkey instead or take the cable car down.

Fira Trail
Are you up for a little adventure? Get ready to hike the Fira Trail! The Fira Trail is a three hour hike from Fira to Oia, right next to the west coastline. It is a rough hike at some points, so it isn’t for everyone, but if you are up for a long walk and shoot some amazing photos at the same time, the Fira Trail should be on you bucket-list.

Hot Springs at Nea Kameni
We decided to finish this list with the hot springs, which can be reached by boat from the Old Port. The boat will take you to the coast of the volcanic island Nea Kameni, where you can jump in the water and swim to the hot spring. Opinions about visiting the hot springs and hiking on the volcanic island are divided, some love it and some hate it. Thats why we put it at the bottom of this list and let you decide.
